(Dawson County, GA) Dawson County Park and Recreation was not only crowning football champions this past weekend. They also had four cheerleading squads competing in the North Georgia Youth Football Association (NGYFA) Cheer Competition. Two out of the four Dawson County squads competing brought home first place finishes and the other two finished in second place at the competition held at Dawson County High School on Sunday November 8. For the first time ever a five- and six-year old Dawson County squad participated in the event and brought home the gold. Their impeccable performance was solid enough to put them ahead of a very good Chestatee squad. In the nine-year old competition the Dawson County squad finished second losing by only four points to a tough Chestatee opponent. The 10-year old division was equally competitive with Dawson County’s squad coming out on top and bringing home the first place trophy. A tougher competition ensued in the 11-12 division with Dawson County pulling off a superior performance only to be deducted for exceeding the designated stunting level. They finished second in their division after the deductions. “All the girls put on a great show,” said Park and Recreation Director Lisa Henson. “Their routines were well put together. Their fan involvement was great and their tumbling and stunting was solid. They all worked very hard putting together their competition performances. The coaches spent countless hours getting them ready and all the girls performed brilliantly,” said Henson. “We are proud of these squads and this growing program within our Park and Rec. system. In addition, we would like to thank Kim Fleming and Dawson County High School for hosting the NGYFA event,” Henson said.
